When was the last time you reviewed your staff handbook? Do you know what your current sickness and absence policy says? Are you prepared for imminent changes?
From the 6 April 2010 'Fit Notes' are set to replace the traditional doctor's sick note. The Fit Notes will allow doctors to prescribe the type of work that an employee is fit to do, rather than sign him or her off work altogether.
If an employee is deemed fit for some work the GP will recommend a course of action for a phased return to work, including amended duties, altered hours and workplace adaption's which employees can then consider.
These changes will affect all businesses. If you are not aware of the changes or have not made any appropriate plans, there is no need to panic. The Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) has produced a guide entitled 'Sick Note to Fit Note: Statement of Fitness for Work'. This guide is for all employers and includes information on the changes to the form itself and the effect of these changes on your business and your workforce.
