I was listening to the radio this morning as to how Sachin Tendulkar (the Indian cricketer for those not in the know) has yet to reach his 100th century. Why is it that we make such a big deal about he scoring 100 runs, surely 99 is pretty good! It's the significance of numbers.
So is it that we want to see progress from one year to the next, even though it is just another day? Nevertheless we decide that something must change come the New Year.
For many couples this decision to change comes about due to the "perfect storm" which is Christmas. The expectations of a magical happy family Christmas and the reality of it actually being an expensive, stressful time when couples are obliged to spend more time together than they would normally do. Add on the significance of a New Year (back to the numbers bit) then it is no wonder that there is a surge in people contacting a solicitor and getting advice as to separating from their partner. According to the Family Mediation Helpline, more than 1.8 million couples will have contemplated divorcing their partner during the Christmas period.
Going to see a solicitor can seem to be a daunting prospect but most people firstly just want to know about the options available to them both as to whether the relationship can be saved and, if not, the best way to sort everything out in an amicable fashion. There is no harm in making an informed decision.
Tendulkar will get another chance to reach his 100th, and yes, it will be in the New Year.
