The Information Commissioner is increasing its campaign in relation to serious breaches of the Data Protection Act.
A Belfast Hospital has been fined £225,000 for a breach involving the sensitive personal data of thousands of patients and staff.
The information was left in a disused site to which trespasses gained access. The penalty reflected the fact that the case involved confidential and sensitive personal data of thousands of patients and staff which was compromised.
Meanwhile a financial services company, has been fined £150,000 after losing two back up tapes containing names, addresses and telephone numbers of customers. The Information Commissioner has said that this year has seen some truly shocking examples of the loss of sensitive personal data.
