For some time now the media has highlighted the Government's intention to ensure that separating parents are both involved in the upbringing of their children.
Proposed amendments now published to the existing law will provide for a presumption, unless the contrary is shown, that the involvement of both parents in the life of the child concerned will further the child's welfare.
There will of course be circumstances where it will not be in the child's best interest to have contact with one parent and the government has now defined this as being where the child may be at risk of suffering harm.
The amendment is intended to reinforce the importance of ongoing relationships between children and both parents.
