The Information Commissioner’s Office has issued a press release that Data Protection Act remains the law of the land irrespective of the referendum result. This is in case of public confusion. It confirms that if the UK is not part of the EU then the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation framework starting in 2018 will not have direct effect. However the ICO has pointed out that with so many businesses and services operating across borders, international consistency around data protection laws and rights is crucial to businesses as well as citizens. The ICO will be speaking to government to present their view that reform of the UK law remains necessary, as predicted in my article before the referendum.
