The Sheffield-based law firm, which is steeped in local history, was first established in the city in 1802 and has evolved to become one of the leading practices in the region.
Throughout its history, Wake Smith has played a vital role in advising businesses and individuals, growing to offer specialist legal advice in areas including corporate and commercial, litigation, commercial property, employment, private client work, conveyancing, family law and clinical negligence.
John Baddeley, chairman of Wake Smith, said: “220 years of successful business is something to celebrate.
“We are very proud of our development into a highly successful, contemporary firm, which is built upon the strength of our historical roots and our client partnerships.
“The firm has come a long way since 1802, when Bernard John Wake started the Wake & Sons practice.
“We have continued to provide the high levels of individual and company-related service our clients are accustomed to, and which we have built our reputation in the sector, and region, around.
“Understanding the legal needs of key business and individuals has enabled the firm to continue expanding to become one of Sheffield's leading law firms and we have further announcements about business growth in the new year.”
The practice was founded back in 1802 by Bernard John Wake and was then known as Wake & Sons. In 1934, the firm of Smith Smith and Fielding amalgamated with Wake & Sons to create Wake Smith & Co.
Wake Smith & Co eventually merged with Benson Clegg in August 2006, and later with Tofields, in 2007, forming Wake Smith & Tofields. In May 2011, Wake Smith & Tofields converted to a limited liability partnership and took the name of Wake Smith LLP.
In May 2015, it converted to Wake Smith Solicitors Limited and moved to its new office, No.1 Velocity, in the heart of the legal quarter and the city centre in 2016, amongst many of the high profile businesses it acts for, and close to all the amenities of the city centre.
