What does B-Corp certified mean?

Wake Smith Solicitors 17 May 2024

Wake Smith Solicitors’ corporate team is helping firms gain the prestigious B-Corp status.

The B-Corp certification is only awarded to those companies that meet certain standards for social and environmental performance including paying fair wages, having sustainable supply chains and demonstrating transparency and accountability.

It was created by B Lab, a global non-profit that aims to make it easier for mission-driven companies to have a more positive impact on the planet and its people.

Businesses must pass the rigorous accreditation process from global organisers B Lab after being measured against five key categories: governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment.

B-Corp status is not a one-time pass, as companies have to re-certify and improve their score every three years.

As a certified business, they are held legally accountable to consider the impact decisions have on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.

Rebecca Robinson, director and head of Wake Smith Solicitors’ corporate law team said: “Many people are looking to make their lifestyle more planet-friendly, and have more considerations about which brands they buy from. Companies that receive B-Corp certification should benefit from the trust this can engender with their consumers, communities, and suppliers.

“B-Corp certified businesses are also likely to attract and retain employees who are committed to the company’s mission; and gain access to a community of like-minded businesses and differentiate themselves from competitors.

“Certified businesses can also increase their ability to attract investment capital and customers who prioritise social and environmental responsibility.

“This certification allows customers to spot the brands that have an incredible ethos and are continually striving to do things better – for its team, the planet and the people within it.”

Sheffield’s spicy table sauce manufacturers Henderson’s, which has been producing its famous relish in the city since 1885 and is an ongoing client of Wake Smith, has recently gained B-Corp status.

According to B Lab, there are 6,856 certified B corporations in 161 industries and 90 countries worldwide as of late May 2023.
